Instrument · Fair share

Fair, not equal.

Split the shared bills by what each of you earns, so each of you gives up the same share of your pay. One number you both see. Nothing to argue about.

Who covers what, each month

Alex

$1,240

59% of the shared total

Sam

$860

41% of the shared total

Alex covers $1,240, Sam $860 — each pays the same 20% of what they earn.

Split down the middle it would be $1,050 each: 16.9% of what Alex earns, 24.4% of what Sam earns. Split fairly, Alex covers $190 more than half, and Sam $190 less.

The arithmetic

Each person's share = the shared total × their take-home pay ÷ what you take home together. Everyone gives up the same share of their pay.

  1. Shared$2,100.00 in shared bills a month
  2. Together$6,200.00 + $4,300.00 = $10,500.00 take‑home
  3. The share$2,100.00 ÷ $10,500.00 = 20% of each income
  4. Alex20% × $6,200.00 = $1,240.00
  5. Sam20% × $4,300.00 = $860.00

Every shared bill, split fairly.

In a Tally Family, each of you sets a monthly income, in your own currency if you like, and Tally converts every income to one currency at the day's rate. Split a shared bill, pick Fair, and each person's cut follows their share of the household's income. Who owes whom nets down to one number, settled in a tap.

Split bills fairly in Tally

Income is one of three things each person chooses to share, and Fair is offered only when everyone in the Family shares theirs: a fair split over a guessed income would not be fair. Groups split Equal or Custom. A Family holds up to six people. Creating one is part of Tally Pro; joining one you are invited to is free.

Questions

Is splitting by income fairer than half each?

It is one definition of fair: each of you gives up the same share of what you bring home. Half each is another, and so is pooling everything. This page puts the two side by side; which rule you choose is yours to agree on together.

What if one of us earns nothing right now?

Then a split by income puts every shared bill on the other person. If that is not what you want, agree on amounts that suit you both: Tally's Custom split takes any amounts you choose.

Can we split across two currencies?

Yes. In Tally each of you sets your income in your own currency, and both are converted to one currency at the day's rate before the shares are worked out. On this page, enter both in the same currency.
